Rainbow Trip Report

Still no good words on trout this spring. Had good reports on some nice size fish but few and far between and very few small fish as usual. Looks like we may have a slow spring with hopes for a strong fall pick up – who knows. Flounder has picked up a little and should continue into summer. This shot is of a nice almost citation by one of my newest trout fishing customers, Matt Deaton; thought it was citation but only close – 4.72. Picture not good but probably best cause he wouldn’t help the picture! Keep going Matt.
Oriental Boat Show was filled with vendors but my thought is that we lacked patrons this year. My booth was successful but no as good as last year. Plan on coming our next year, Rotary Club is doing a great job of raising money for local causes.
I went fishing in Branson Missouri this week with Capt Steve Dickie of Anglers Advantage. I fished for rainbow and hopes of a large brown trout. Let me tell you, they have a great fishery supported by the state stocking rainbows monthly. No brown stuck but wow – rainbows by the numbers and nice fish too. Missed way more than caught – a lot different than speckled trout bite. You can see difference ib rainbow species, brighter are state fish and dull are silver federal fish – does this relate to our world??? Maybe one day we can get a NC Fisheries speckled trout stocking program? A lot of fun and highly recommend www.Anglersadvantage.com to anyone heading out to Missouri. I will be telling you soon about a UV bait he is working on.
Still have a load of bulk spool line available a wholesale pricing and will be putting on craigs list next week.
I am now stock with Deep Creek Lures rubber baits. These are a scented rubber in great colors and shapes at cheaper than my Gulp pricing. Come check it out. There is one called flounder flap that I am told is a killer on flounder.
No weigh in my tournament. Application can be downloaded off my site and sent in.

Boat Show Info & Report
Slow to get any strong reports on our trout – getting good reports on occasion and next day not squat. Hearing of fish from New Bern to the sound with no area any better than other. Hope we see a change soon or we may have a slow spring recovery. This shot is of a nice catch by one of my customers not wanting publicity; thought one was citation but only close – 4.88. He wouldn’t let his cousin even catch 1 fish, just net!
I will be at the Oriental Boat Show next weekend 16-18 Apr. They have sold out of vendor space – should be a great event. Come see me.
I also have a load of bulk spool line available a wholesale pricing. This came from a friends brother in law who managed to hoard up stuff. All in great shape with sizes ranging fron 12-80 lb. Berkley Sensation, XL, XT, and Big Game. Some Spider Line too. Let me know if you can use any at wholesale cost.
I am now stock with Deep Creek Lures rubber baits. These are a scented rubber in great colors and shapes at cheaper than my Gulp pricing. Come check it out. There is one called flounder flap that I am told is a killer on flounder.
No weigh ins in my tournament. Application can be downloaded off my site and sent in.

Spring Has Sprung

Warmer weather is bring a very few reports of trout showing willingness to bite. Don’t expect to go and catch a limit on short notice but might pick up a few if you have patience.
Speaking of patience, Camden Newell caught his first rock with Grandpa eagerly watching. We had a Grandpa, Dad and Son trip that was a little slow but beautiful weather. Camden was ready to go in when it all happened. I asked him what he learned from this and without hesitation he said “patience”. You can see the pleasure show in the smiles – he and grandpa. He demanded he take home 1 filet and have it for supper; hope he enjoyed it.

Trout Update

It has been awhile since I could speak about a nice trout catch. This is it and I believe the best I have heard in awhile.
Bill Gillespie recently move here as an avid sportsman and has been learning to fish for trout hard. He has done well with a little advice and has landed his first NC citation. He caught this 5.62 trout along with 2 other nice fish today. I was invited to fish with him but declined to work on a house for my daughter. Oh well.
This is a good sign and I have just heard of a few more fish caught around area as well. Warmer weather could bring back what we all have missed this winter.
I am going to come out of “Hibernation” March 31st no matter if I have completed my winter project. As always – call first to assure I’m in, I know I will still have work to do at daughters house.
Come see my new selection and let me help you with any trolling motor or power pole wishes you have. Minn Kota is running rebates now and I have on-board MK-210 chargers here that are included in rebate.
My tournament is still open for applicant and all can still get in until the end, just can’t weigh in for 5 days after entry. Application can be downloaded off my site and sent in.
Call me at 670-2841 if I can help.

Snowy Report
Snowy day in eastern NC. Best picture I can get is of my grandsons Marvin Minnesott snowman.
Weather has put a damper on a lot of guys. The few I know going are catching some trout – hit or miss – and rock the same. Perseverance is the key – gotta love it!
I Have gotten in a lot of my show purchases and rearranged shop to accommodate. Some of the new products are:
Bait casting combos - Abu Garcia 6500TC and Shimano Citica that can be matched with a Kunaan or Shimano Clarus rods.
Spinning are Daiwa Excelor, Pflueger Maxxt 30, or Okuma Avengers that can be matched with the same Kunaan or Shimano Clarus rods. Have a few McGill Wright Blair Wiggins coming - on backorder. Also have some good condition used larger Penn combos and heavy Ugly Stick Rods available at discount prices.
I have a good color selection on 4M, 38MR, 16MR, 17MR, and 7MR Mirrolures along with a new line of eel product from Vision Lures.
My shirt order was different than last year with colors this year and an assortment of kids shirts.
Minn Kota is running a rebate on select models until mid April – let me help you with you needs and installation.
I am working on a deal with another bait manufacturer that all trout, drum and rock guys will love – hopefully coming soon!
I have a good size selection of Sufix and Berkley line to freshen your reels with. Ranges from 10# to 80# in mono and 10 and 20 in braids. Can clean and re-spool for the coming season
My tournament is slowly grow in participants, not seeing great interest but all can still get in until the end, just can’t weigh in for 5 days after entry. Application can be downloaded off my site and sent in.
I will be getting out of hibernation in mid March and can still assist you with any wants and needs if you call me at 670-2841.

Late Jan Update
Been a busy January and haven’t had time to post updates. Good cold rainy/snowy day is allowing me this time.
I have been getting reports of trout in numerous creeks with some little trout and nice fish mixed. Phil Rawls weighed in my first citation of 2010 caught 28/29 Jan. His fish weighed in at 5.32 pounds and nice to see since all the cold weather. It’s ashamed he isn’t in my shop tournament – who knows what this coming year will bring. Not too many entries to date and you can still join at $35 and not weigh in for 5 days.
The rock are still being caught in New Bern in the Neuse and Trent. We are waiting for shad run and wait to see if water levels are going to mess that up!
I am keeping Mud Minnows alive in my tank for Live Baiters. Also have small buckets with lids for these minnows too. Call 670-2841 for assistance with bait.
Going to do Power Pole order this coming week– can give good pricing on this order, call for details. Also, Minn Kota rebates are soon to start up to $100 depending on model. I can give great discount on RT80SP/CP 54” motors. Call me for your best pricing.
I am restocking shelves with new inventory arriving from Henrys Show. Have assorted colors of my t-shirts this year in sizes from med-3x in adults and med-large in kids. There are loads of rods and reels with a new line for me – conventional reels. I also have collapsible bait bucket from Longer Life Products. In the food line, I now have Nags Head Tackle BBQ sauces and spices. These people make this with their own hands, not purchased from another source – good stuff. I can now re-spool you rods from small to offshore. I am carrying Berkley Big Game, Fireline, and Fieline Crystal and Sufix Superior.
If interested in my tournament, application can be downloaded off my site and sent in.

pamlico county update
As of this AM – no floating trout in Pamlico County. Keep fingers crossed and remember just floating trout are not all dead and if slight movement will regain equilibrium after sun warms them. This information comes from a seasoned waterman that I fully respect.
I am keeping Mud Minnows alive in my tank for Live Baiters. Also have small buckets with lids for these minnows too. Those using them locally have been reporting good success. Call 670-2841 for assistance with bait.
Don’t let temps scare you – use extra caution to not fall in and fish SLOWWWWWW. Light bites make hook-ups harder for those not familiar with cold weather bite. Rock still available around New Bern structure with some 10+ lb fish being reported.
My 12 month tournament starts Jan 16 2010. Final early entry ends 10 Jan so get on board or fee goes up to $35 and cant weight in for 5 days from entry.
Will be put a Power Pole order in soon after show – If interested, call me.
If interested in my tournament, application can be downloaded of my site and sent in.

End off 2009 Report

This report will close out 2009 and roll us into 2010. My assessment is it has been a strange weather year making fishing more of a challenge. Too much rain and NE wind with NE being good but not extended periods as we had.
Trout are still being caught in all the local creeks, just have to have patience and move until you get on them. A lot of small fish with good quality fish mixed in. Rock action is also still good too. Michael got his fish citation during Christmas season with Jimmy and Phil boxing some nice fish the same day.
These patterns should continue with weather participating BUT I fear this up-coming freeze and current patterns. We haven’t had a freeze for years and this could hurt our trout. Cross your fingers and hope my thoughts don’t happen!
Fall tournament prizes went to Tommy Cowan 1st , Lisa Cowan 2nd and Brad Buck 3rd.
My 12 month tournament starts Jan 16 2010. There will be some rule changes so look for application. Don’t have many applications as yet. Who knows, I’m trying.
Mud Minnows arein my tanks now for live baiters. I am getting ready to do another Power Pole order so contact me for discount pricing. I am also taking Costa Del Mar sunglass orders for approximate February delivery. Henrys Show is this coming week and will be glad to share discounts on all requests; trolling motors, rods/reels, ect. Can also handle installs for trolling motors and power poles and clean and re-spool your reels.
I am in my winter hours now. This is my fishing, dealer shows and honey do time. This means I will not open regular hours but if here I will be glad to assist. You can also call me for information or help. Minnows will be available – call to arrange.
If interested in my tournament, application can be downloaded of my site and sent in.
Hope all had a Safe and Merry Christmas and wish for a Happy New Year.

Dec 14 Update

Trout have been moving about of late – have to move with them. A lot of small fish being caught with some good fish mixed in. Did have 1 citation this week with Fred weighing in just over 5# fish. Nice catch guy.Trout have been moving about of late – have to move with them. A lot of small fish being caught with some good fish mixed in. Not a normal winter but hopes of cold weather setting us up. Not a normal winter but hopes of cold weather setting us up.
Rock are still the mainstay – I had only one strike Monday on my short 2 hr trip and caught a 6# rock on DOA 5.5 BFL. I have been picking on Mark Nichols about this bait and finally showing us locals what it can catch. He slammed it! I am also selling his other products in a varied way of rigging. Come see me for instructions.
2 days left in my tournament. Tommy Cowan still leading. Hope to see some change but who knows with the weather patterns we are in.
I have decided by getting some influence to hold a 12 month tournament instead of 2 seasonal events as I have been doing. Will have applications out soon for Jan 16 2010 start date. There will be some rule changes so look for application.
I an keeping Mud Minnows in my tanks now for live baiters and Old Nags BBQ sauce and spices. I am getting ready to do another Power Pole order so contact me for discount pricing. I am also taking Costa Del Mar sunglass orders for approximate February delivery.

Added note – I ran an add in County Compass offering a 10% sale through the 19th. They were suppose to say bring ad in. OOPS. Well I am offering this on these sites. You come in and say you saw my post – TA DA – 10% off of stock items.

9 Dec Report
Had good reports this weekend from New Bern to Oriental. Plenty of trout with some nice fish mixed in. I tagged a couple down my way Tuesday and lost (the big one) one nice fish. Need to change some hooks.
Windy mid week will require safe fishing and finding water. Maybe a northerly turn will give us much needed flush.
My tournament is winding down – one week left. Lisa Cowan got her man to carry her fishing and weighed in a real nice 6.92#er to take second behind her man. She also pushed here nephew to third. Look for a few more weigh-ins and possible upset bids. Not going to run this format next year – possible one or two day event if I can get participation. You guys let me know.
Mud Minnows in my tanks now for live baiters.
Remember Christmas is near and I have the gifts for your mate. Now stocking Old Nags BBQ Sauce and Spices. These are homemade by our friend Paulette Harris around Nags Head area and really make nice gifts and just good eats. I have an ad coming out in The County Compass this week offering discounts for your Christmas shopping through the 19th. Get a copy and come see me. Have several price ranges of rod and reel combos, t-shirts, coffee mugs and more to help make someone Christmas special. Can also fill those big items like trolling motors, power poles and costa delmars before Christmas too.
I will be going into my Hibernation Mode starting around 16th of December. This is my fishing, dealer shows and honey do time. This means I will not open regular hours but if here I will be glad to assist. Can also call me for information or help. Minnows will be available – call to arrange.

1 Dec Report

Had an afternoon invite from Stuart which turned out good. Had several trout with Stuart getting his first citation (5.96) and a nice one to start it off. As dark fell the rock got fired up on a school of mullet. Fast action with little light, had to give up but ended up boating 2 on light tackle with this one weighing 6#.
Not a lot of reports this week and a lot more of rain with more to come. Water is fresh but fish are there. Have to move around and keep eyes peeled for rock action.
Still no good report for rock jetty, who knows; maybe cold will push them down.
Mud Minnows in my tanks now for live baiters.

Thanksgiving Report

Turkey day was a charter of brothers. My ritual this year was taking my two brothers and brother in law fishing. Challenging crew but Mike (brother in law) did it all, skunking the rest. Fished New Bern and pulled out 1 nice just under 7# rock and 1 trout. Fun AM then time to eat. All the families around the table – just what Thanksgiving and Christmas is all about.
Tommy Cowen has jumped in the lead with his 7.7# fish, knocking Mark out of the money for now. Lisa had to help make picture look good! Expect more fish weigh ins with cold weather coming in this coming weekend.
Had one of my friends that knows his trout catch a limit during NW blow. Nothing huge but a good limit for tough conditions – even share some for wife and I tonight.
Colder weather should push Rudee Inlet Va Beach large trout south. Watch for rock jetty to pick up or Get Started!
Live shrimp is over for me this year. I am heading out tomorrow for mud minnows with hopes of having them now through next fall. Mirrolures and DOA still great baits of my choice.
Continue thinking of any wants or needs for tackle, trolling motors, Power Poles, Costa Del Mars, hunting gear (no guns), camping gear, etc. that you are wanting but no rush. Henrys show coming up soon and I always take orders and share discounts.

Pre T’Day Report

Rainy day Friday resulted in a Good morning for my 2 guys, Mitch and Steven. I know Mitch had never caught speckled trout and finally got to do it with Mirrolures after earlier live shrimp bite. They were a lot of fun and troopers dealing with the rain and fog. Sent them to New Bern for rock in their boat for the afternoon but I think they had enough and didn’t make it!
Weekend reports have been good as well in the creeks and still in river. This coming weekend may hold changes with cold air pushing in.
Also had a report from Rudee Inlet in Va Beach that numerous large trout were being caught moving out of inland waters. This could be good news for beach and rock jetty in coming weeks with colder weather coming in too.
My tournament into the last few weeks ending Dec 16 with 1st thru 3rd payouts and sizes currently 6.2# - 5.86#, close now but expect sizes to go UP.
I will keep live shrimp as available as long as temperature allows. Will soon start stocking up on mud minnows as well which can stand cold and work as good.
Start thinking of any wants or needs for tackle, trolling motors, Power Poles, Costa Del Mars, hunting gear (no guns), camping gear, etc. that you are wanting but no rush. Henrys show coming up soon and I always take orders and share discounts.
